Dylan Hedtler-Gaudette, a Maine native and government affairs director for the Project on Government Oversight, testified before Congress on February 12, 2025, criticizing the Trump administration’s approach to government agencies through Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Hedtler-Gaudette, who is blind, specifically condemned the “flamethrower” approach taken by the administration, particularly focusing on the mass firing of inspectors general.

Following his testimony, Hedtler-Gaudette became the target of online attacks, notably from Elon Musk himself. Musk shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) that mocked Hedtler-Gaudette’s blindness, stating that the “blind director of watchdog group funded by George Soros testifies that he does not see widespread evidence of government waste,” accompanied by laughing emojis. This post garnered over 21 million views and sparked a flood of derogatory comments targeting Hedtler-Gaudette’s disability.

On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Hedtler-Gaudette responded to the online backlash, stating that he wasn’t surprised by the attacks. He described the experience as “surreal” and noted that the focus was entirely on his blindness rather than the substance of his testimony. Hedtler-Gaudette characterized the attacks as “juvenile, petty, ableist and anti-blindness bigotry”.

Despite the online harassment, Hedtler-Gaudette remains undeterred. He has vowed to continue speaking out against government waste, regardless of whether it originates from Republicans or Democrats. He emphasized that he will not be silenced or intimidated by these attacks.

This incident highlights the contentious atmosphere surrounding the Trump administration’s and Musk’s approach to government efficiency, as well as the use of social media by powerful figures to target critics. It also underscores the ongoing debate about accountability, transparency, and the appropriate methods for addressing government waste and inefficiency.

Donald Trump has repeatedly targeted judges and prosecutors involved in his legal battles, often using social media as a platform for his attacks.
