: A Look at Power and Control
Dictatorship thrives when one person or a small group gains absolute power, often by manipulating fear and exploiting crises. We’re living like a frog with the pot being brought to a boil. Our greatest danger is thinking that it is not going to be that bad. Here’s my TLDR of the steps that dictators from Mussolini to al-Assad to Milošević, Gaddafi, Maduro, Bolsonaro and Orbán have used to gain power.
Step 1: Exploit Fear
Dictators often emerge during turmoil—economic collapse, political instability, or war. They promise safety and solutions, appealing to people’s desperation.
Step 2: Build Loyalty
Winning over key allies—military leaders, political insiders, or the public—requires promises of prosperity, pride, or protection.
Step 3: Control Information
Through media manipulation and propaganda, dictators shape public perception, amplifying their strengths and discrediting opposition.
tep 4: Silence Opposition
From passing restrictive laws to outright intimidation, they target dissenting voices, ensuring little resistance to their rule.
Step 5: Command the Forces
The loyalty of the military and police secures their reign. Strategic appointments and rewards ensure compliance.
Step 6: Rewrite the Rules
Altering constitutions, canceling elections, or granting unlimited authority cements their grip on power.
Step 7: Cult of Personality
Dictators often construct an image of invincibility, portraying themselves as heroes destined to lead.
Why This Matters
History warns us that even gradual steps can erode democracy. Understanding these tactics equips us to safeguard freedom.
What Can You Do?
Stay informed. Speak up. Vote for leaders who value democracy. Learn more. Read de Tocqueville, Hannah Arendt, Tim Snyder, Anne Applebaum, and Madeleine Albright. Unite with others who sense the danger.
Democracy demands vigilance. Together, we must protect it.
