Seen that way, modern AI becomes easier to understand. Machines aren’t really thinking the way people imagine; they’re sorting through enormous collections of information and grouping things that resemble one another.
Sometimes the results are insightful, sometimes nonsense. Either way, the system is drawing from information that originally came from somewhere else: us.
Modern AI systems train on vast collections of human writing—books, articles, arguments, discoveries, mistakes. Centuries of people trying to explain the world to one another.
The machines didn’t invent the knowledge they’re studying.
They inherited it.
Seen from that perspective, similar structures begin to appear far beyond computing.
Human civilization forms networks too. Economies, trade routes, finance, and communication quietly link people across enormous distances. Most of the time we barely notice the web because it works: a container ship leaves one port, a truck pulls out of a warehouse, a payment clears through a bank, and somewhere a grocery store restocks its shelves.
From inside the system, it often feels chaotic—delays, shortages, price swings, political crises. Step back far enough, though, and patterns begin to emerge. Trade routes connect continents, supply chains link farms and factories, and financial flows move capital around the planet.
What looks messy up close begins to reveal structure.
Years ago, at Cornell, I watched a supercomputer simulate fluid dynamics. At first the display looked chaotic—colors twisting in every direction. Then gradually the structure appeared as currents folded into one another and the outline of a storm became visible.
The mathematics had been there all along. The visualization simply allowed us to see it.
Civilization can look the same way. From inside it feels unpredictable and confusing, but step back far enough and patterns begin to appear in the movement of goods, information, and ideas.
The storm was always there.
The real challenge is learning to recognize it before it arrives.
