The Ferry Was Full (Continued)

Federal spokespeople praised the operation.

They said it proved no place is above the law. They pointed fingers at “sanctuary politicians.” One DHS official said the quiet part loud: “We will not allow criminal illegal aliens to roam free, putting American lives in danger.”

That was the justification. But not the whole story.

This was more than an arrest. It was a show of force. A message: even here, in the land of porch flags and donor dinners, federal power doesn’t need permission anymore.

Congressman Bill Keating says his office wasn’t notified. He’s called for transparency and legal support for the detainees. Governor Maura Healey condemned the surprise tactics. School officials vowed to keep ICE out of school grounds unless they show up with a judge.

They’re trying to draw a line. But it may already be crossed.

ICE’s Boston office says they plan to return.

The raid ended quietly.

The Coast Guard cutter left Menemsha just after 2 p.m., its deck crowded with federal agents and detained men staring at the receding shoreline. Some had lived here for years. Some had children in school that morning. All were gone by sundown.

The ferry came and went.

Tourists stepped off, chatting about seafood and sunset reservations. Few noticed the absence. Fewer knew what had happened just hours before.

“In a place built to shelter power, the powerless were hunted instead.”
